Carnegie Celebration with St Bede’s School

15 Coleridge students from years 7 to 9 were invited to join St Bede’s reading club today to celebrate the awarding of the Carnegie Prize for Literature 2018. Results were announced at 1.15pm via a live link-up to the ceremony in London.

The winning book is Geraldine McCaughrean’s novel Where the World Ends. The announcement was greeted with groans from all of the students at the event -they had been hoping for The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas or After the Fire by Will Hill. The students spent the morning arguing about the quality of the novels and competing to answer quiz questions.

Ms Varney attended the event and she said the following: “I was very proud of our students for reading so many of the novels on the shortlist (there were 8) and for holding their own in negotiations with students from other schools over what should win. We ended the event by sharing in a large quantity of celebration cake.”
